A pergola is basically a trellis or framework that is mounted horizontally rather than vertically. Pergolas are usually supported by heavy lumber posts. Pergolas have their origin in Italy where they were used to support grape vines and other climbing plants creating a covered walkway or patio.
Always read the pergola plans carefully and make sure that there is enough information provided for you to be able to complete the project - before you invest in materials. Some of the plans are excellent, giving a great deal of instruction in text, pictures and drawings while other plans are only drawings and still others are only sketches.
